Portal venous gas | Radiology Reference Article ...

10-11-2021 · Similar to x-ray features, portal venous gas manifests on CT as branching gaseous foci of low density in the liver, portal vein and its tributaries. The vessel-gas interface may cause streak artifact. Typically, the gas in the liver is peripheral which helps differentiate it from more central gas due to pneumobilia. See also

Gas in the Portal Venous System | Radiology

In recent years, however, there have appeared two reports of gas in the portal venous system, a condition which roentgenographically closely mimics gas in the bile passages. Wolfe and Evans (4) first reported the condition in 1955. They had a series of 6 cases in infants. All were proved at autopsy, and in 4, roentgenograms showed the gas pattern.

Portal venous gas - benign etiology | Radiology Case ...

Hepatic portal venous gas, when seen on conventional x-rays, is often associated with a poor prognosis. However, with the advent of cross-sectional imagining, the detection of hepatic portal venous gas has improved and several benign causes have been reported in literature 1-2,4 .

Portal vein | Radiology Reference Article | Radiopaedia.org

13-09-2021 · A portal venous system is one in which veins connect two capillary beds; or in other words drain one organ/organ system and pass into another organ/organ system rather than being directly returned to the heart. The hepatic portal vein is the only portal system many are aware of.

Portomesenteric Vein Gas: Pathologic Mechanisms, CT ...

01-09-2000 · Portal vein gas can be visualized at conventional radiography, but substantial amounts must be present for detection (, 5 ). The radiographic criterion for portal vein gas is a branching area of low attenuation extending to within 2 cm of the liver capsule (, 1 ).

Hepatic portal venous gas: Physiopathology, etiology ...

07-08-2009 · Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG), an ominous radiologic sign, was first described by Wolfe and Evens in infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)[1,2]. HPVG is associated with numerous underlying abdominal diseases, ranging from benign causes to potentially lethal diseases that require prompt surgical intervention[3–6].
