Hepatic portal venous gas: Physiopathology, etiology ...

07-08-2009 · The proposed factors predisposing the portal venous system to the accumulation of gas include the following: (1) escape of gas produced by gas-forming organisms in the bowel lumen or in an abscess which then circulate into the liver or (2) the presence of gas-forming organisms in the portal venous system with passage of gas into the circulation[7].

Portal venous gas | Radiology Reference Article ...

10-11-2021 · Similar to x-ray features, portal venous gas manifests on CT as branching gaseous foci of low density in the liver, portal vein and its tributaries. The vessel-gas interface may cause streak artifact. Typically, the gas in the liver is peripheral which helps differentiate it from more central gas due to pneumobilia. See also

Gas in the Liver - Gastroenterology

11-04-2019 · The CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis depicts portal venous gas throughout the liver ( Figure A, B, white arrows ). Hepatic portal venous gas is traditionally regarded an ominous radiologic sign and appears as a branching area of low attenuation on CT scanning extending to within 2 cm of the liver capsule. 1

Hepatic portal venous gas: the ABCs of management

Hepatic portal venous gas therefore predicts high risk of mortality (50%) if detected by plain radiography or by CT in a patient with additional evidence of necrotic bowel. If detected by CT in patients after surgical or endoscopic manipulation, the clinician is advised that there is no evidence of increased risk.

Hepatic portal venous gas: A case report and review of ...

Air in the liver is not a specific disease entity but merely another diagnostic clue for patients suffering from an acute abdomen. The occurrence of gas in portal veins has been described in literature as pneumoportogram, gas embolisation of the portal vein or portal venous gas.

Portal venous gas after hepatic transplantation ...

In seven (18%) of 39 liver transplantation patients, serial Doppler sonographic examinations performed in the first 2 weeks after the transplantation showed transient, highly echogenic nonshadowing particles moving within the portal vein, believed to be portal venous air.

Hepatic Portal Venous Gas: Review of the Literature and ...

01-06-2014 · Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is considered an ominous sign, referring to an abdominal catastrophe. It was first described in 1955 by Wolfe and Evans [1] in six infants dying from necrotizing enterocolitis. Four of them had a vascular pattern of gas in the liver seen on plain films prior to death.
