Linux nologin - How to disable user login in Linux

08-10-2021 · In this linux nologin guide, we saw several methods that can be used to disable a user account on a Linux system. This included editing the user’s shell to nologin or false, which are popular choices, or just changing the user’s encrypted password in /etc/shadow so they would never be able to login. Use whichever method you find most appropriate for your system …

nologin(8) - Linux manual page - Michael Kerrisk

nologin is a per-account way to disable login (usually used for system accounts like http or ftp). nologin uses /etc/nologin.txt as an optional source for a non-default message, the login access is always refused independently of the file. pam_nologin (8) PAM module usually prevents all non-root users from logging into the system. pam_nologin ...

Does /usr/sbin/nologin as a login shell serve a security ...

11-09-2014 · nologin displays a message that an account is not available and exits non-zero. It is intended as a replacement shell field to deny login access to an account. If the file /etc/nologin.txt exists, nologin displays its contents to the user instead of the default message. The exit code returned by nologin is always 1.

Linux user not being able to login (/bin/nologin) - Stack ...

06-07-2015 · 1. This answer is not useful. Show activity on this post. The shell for this user is set to a non-existent program in order to prevent user from logging in with interactive shell (ssh, local login). Yet the user can authenticate to do some other stuff like copying files through FTP or SMB. Just run as a root to put a normal shell back.

Howto: Linux shell restricting access - nixCraft

08-02-2006 · The best way to put Linux shell access restriction is to use special shell called nologin, which politely refuse a login. It displays a message that an account is not available and exits non-zero. It is intended as a replacement shell field for accounts that have been disabled or have other user level access such as ftp, pop3, smtp etc.

Understanding the /etc/passwd File - Linuxize

01-12-2019 · There are several different authentication schemes that can be used on Linux systems. The most commonly used and standard scheme is to perform authentication against the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files. /etc/passwd is a plain text-based database that contains information for all user accounts on the system. It is owned by root and has 644 permissions.

linux - What is the difference between /sbin/nologin and ...

I have often heard it recommended that a user account should be disabled by setting its shell to /bin/false.But, on my existing Linux systems, I see that a great number of existing accounts (all of them service accounts) have a shell of /sbin/nologin instead.. I see from the man page that /sbin/nologin prints a message to the user saying the account is disabled, and then exits.
