The good news is that most of these will just work transparently in GTK+ applications, since GTK+ and GLib have suitable APIs that can be made to use the portals without any changes required from the sandboxed application. This support is already in place in the master branches; and will be in the 3.22 releases.

12-03-2020 · As soon as I remove GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 firefox is back to being my default browser and no prompts at start up. I have done a search on the internet and have a few hits which state that using GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 is not recommended unless you are using it against a flatpack application.

KDE File Dialogs Don't Load in Firefox with GTK_USE_PORTAL ...

14-03-2020 · Since the update to xdg-desktop-portal-kde version 5.18.3, KDE file dialogs no longer work in Firefox with GTK_USE_PORTAL=1. If I try to select "Save Page As" or "Open File", no dialog at all is presented. The GTK3 dialogs still work without GTK_USE_PORTAL=1. From my research, GTK_USE_PORTAL is intended to be used only in Flatpaks.
