12-05-2020 · Coincidentally, Firefox 84.0 seems to default to Wayland instead of X11 which breaks screen sharing unless `xdg-desktop-portal` is also installed. Therefore, I agree that `xdg-desktop-portal` should be listed as an optional dependency for Firefox 84.0 and above.

12-01-2019 · So when systemd activates xdg-desktop-portal, it doesn't have a DISPLAY envvar to pass to it, which means that xdg-desktop-portal can't pass it to the firefox instance that it launches. This is how it's implemented in mutter (which makes it go through gnome-session, which feeds the user systemd):
