nologin(8) - Linux manual page

nologin displays a message that an account is not available and exits non-zero. It is intended as a replacement shell field to deny login access to an account. If the file /etc/nologin.txt exists, nologin displays its contents to the user instead of the default message. The exit status returned by nologin is always 1.

shell - What's the difference between /sbin/nologin and ...

04-04-2014 · When /sbin/nologin is set as the shell, if user with that shell logs in, they'll get a polite message saying 'This account is currently not available.' This message can be changed with the file /etc/nologin.txt. /bin/false is just a binary that immediately exits, returning false, when it's called, so when someone who has false as shell logs in, they're immediately logged out when …

Linux nologin - How to disable user login in Linux

08-10-2021 · The nologin shell is located at /sbin/nologin.On some systems, this shell may also be located at /usr/sbin/nologin.Either way, it’s the same file and will provide the same function. To set a user’s shell to nologin, you can use the usermod command, along with the -s or --shell option, as seen in the syntax below. In this example, we are setting the shell for user linuxconfig.

Howto: Linux shell restricting access - nixCraft

08-02-2006 · The best way to put Linux shell access restriction is to use special shell called nologin, which politely refuse a login. It displays a message that an account is not available and exits non-zero. It is intended as a replacement shell field for accounts that have been disabled or have other user level access such as ftp, pop3, smtp etc.

How to Block or Disable Normal User Logins in Linux

08-09-2017 · How to Block User Logins Using nologin Shell. This method works a little differently: it only blocks a user from accessing a shell. But he or she can log on to the system via programs such as ftp that do not necessarily require a shell for the user to connect to a system.

How to run command as user who has /usr/sbin/nologin as Shell?

Show activity on this post. All I need to do is to run a specific script as a particular user who does have the nologin/false shell indicated in /etc/passwd. I would run the script as root and this should run as another user. Running: ~# su -c "/bin/touch /tmp/test" testuser. would work, but I need a valid shell for the testuser.

Regain access to root after setting the shell to /sbin/nologin

Then ask someone local to change the shell for you. (or in case of DRAC/ILO change it yourself). If you have a user with the right to shutdown the server, but no to edit /etc/passwd. shut down the server to runlevel 1. That will drop the server to single user mode and you can edit the setting from the console (once again needing HP's ILO, Dell ...
