Chartres Cathedral Royal Portal Sculpture - Chartres Cathedral

The west portal of Chartres Cathedral, known as the Royal Portal, was part of a campaign to beautify the cathedral, which began in the time of Bishop Ivo (reg 1090–1116). It is an integral part of a new west front made for an extension of the nave of Fulbert’s cathedral.

Royal Portals of Chartres - Oneonta

Built as one of the last parts of the Romanesque Church of Chartres, the west portals, or so-called Royal Portals, are one of the few surviving parts of the earlier church incorporated into the High Gothic Church constructed after the devastating fire of 1194. These portals are the major monument of Early Gothic sculpture.

The west façade of Chartres Cathedral has a program of three sculpted portals. The south portal displays the Incarnation Cycle and the Sedes Sapientiae. The lowest lintel depicts, from left to right, the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, and the Annunciation to the Shepherds. The second register shows the Presentation in the Temple.
